Interactive histogram in R Shiny: the Old Faithful example

The classic first Shiny app, rebuilt with bslib: a slider and a variable picker drive a histogram of the Old Faithful geyser data. Free app.R to copy and run.

About this template

The app most people meet first when they learn Shiny, in a modern bslib layout. A slider sets the number of bins and a drop-down picks the variable, and the histogram redraws as you change them.

It is the smallest complete example of Shiny’s reactivity: two inputs, one output and a few lines of server code. A good template for a single chart with a couple of controls.

What's inside

  • A page_sidebar() layout with inputs in the sidebar
  • A sliderInput() and a selectInput()
  • Two value boxes in a layout_columns() grid
  • A histogram in a full-screen card, drawn with renderPlot()

How to run it

  1. In your browser: run it with shinylive. R runs on your computer with webR; the first start downloads R and the packages, which can take a minute.
  2. In R or RStudio: save the code as app.R, install the packages once with install.packages(c("shiny", "bslib")), then run shiny::runApp() in the folder with the file.
  3. In DropToApp: open the template in the editor to change the layout by drag and drop or edit the code, and export your own app.R.
